the betrayal of words

The betrayal of words (this is jewelry), 2014.

One cannot force linguistic usage, and in our need to define and categorize we limit ourselves with words and language. We have mistakenly defined the concept of ‘body’ in a way that makes it necessary to limit the concept of jewelry.

In this piece I am going beyond viewing the body merely as a canvas to be covered with – almost being protected by – jewelry.  The piece and the body are one and the same.  I directly use language to highlight the notion that our use of language to define can be cumbersome as well as divisive.
